Marcio Roberto Vieira Valadao and two of his children, Andre Machado and Mariana Machado are pastors at the charismatic Lagoinha Baptist Church in Brazil. It is now a megachurch which each week has on average an attendance of 50,000. It was founded by Jose Rego on 20th December 1957 in Belo Horizonto, Minas Gerais in Brazil. On 31st July 1972, when Marcio was appointed the senior pastor/president, the church had 300 members. He is affectionately known as ‘paistor’(father) marcio by members of the church. he was anointed apostle in 2001. In 2016 it had 100 churches in Brazil and around the world. In 2020 the church had 50,000 people on average each week . Andrew Lee Evans ( born Wilfred Andrew Lever Evans) was a Pentecostal Christian pastor in the Assemblies of God (AOG) and a former politician in the South Australian Legislative Council. He is most noted for pastoring for 30 years at Klemzig AOG, which became Paradise Community Church, and is now called Influences Church. As a politician he co-founded the conservative Family First Party. Andrew was born in India in 1935. His parents, Tom and Stella, were both missionaries. He studied for the Christian Ministry at the AOG Commonwealth Bible College in Brisbane (1958-60). He graduated with a diploma in theology and was ordained into the ministry in 1963. He served as a missionary for the AOG World Missions in the East Sepik province of Paupa New Guinea for 6 years (1963-9). In 1970 he became senior pastor of Klemzog AOG church in Adelaide. In 1982 it was relocated and called Paradise AOS. From 1977-1997 he served as the National Superintendent of the AOS in Australia. Andrew retired as senior pastor in 2000, after 30 years. The church had reached 4,000 members. His eldest son assumed the leadership. On 20 th January 2003 Andrew was awarded the Order of Austalia Medal OAM for his service to the Christian Church. On retiring he co-founded the Family First Party. In 2002 he was elected into the Legislative council. He retired om 3rd July 2008. Robert Harold Schuller was an American Christian televangelist, pastor, motivational speaker and author. In his 40 years of television he was principally known for the weekly Hour of Power television program which he hosted from 1970 until his retirement in 2010. He began the program after he had been encouraged by a visit from his long time friend Billy Graham in 1969. Robert was also the founder of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California where the program was later broadcast from. Robert’s grandparents were Dutch Immigrants. He was youngest of 5 children. When he was still only 4 an uncle, who was a minister, told him to become an evangelist Single most defining moment of my early life he called it. He studied at Hope College, located in Holland, Michigan and in 1950 received an MD degree from Western Theological Seminary. He was ordained in the reformed Church of America. He worked first in Ivanhoe Reformed Church in Riverdale, Illinois before moving to Garden Grove, California. He opened it at a drive-in movie theatre! 4 miles away he rented a 300 seat former Baptist church. On the Sunday he presided firstly at the church and then drove with his organ to the drive-in for another service! As the congregations grew he bought some land and combined the 2 congregations! Started in 1958, finished in 1961 at a cost of $3 million. Dedicated 5th November 1961. Architect was Richard Neutra. He was able to preach his sermon to both the drive-in (500 cars) and the church congregation. In 1968 the Tower of Hope building (13 storeys high) was added with a 90 foot illuminated cross. Frederick is the founder and presiding bishop of Crenshaw Christian Centre (CCC). located in South Los Angles, California. He is known for his Ever Increasing faith ministries broadcast - which is aired weekly on the radio and television He was born on 3rd January, 1932, in Santa Monica, California. When he started courting his high school sweetheart Betty Ruth Scott he began attending church services… They married in 1953. After they were married he stopped going to church. There was a week of old fashioned tent revivals in their town- Betty went first, he later joined her. He received Jesus as his personal saviour and soon after was born again. He felt the call to the ministry. He heard a voice say ‘You are going to preach my Gospel’. To begin with he carried on working as a paper cutter and being a part time assistant pastor in a Baptist church 1955-7. He struggled to define himself - served as pastor in 4 different Christian denominations. Losing his 8 year old son, Frederick 111, in 1962, killed by a car, did not help. On 28th February 1970, he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. and the evidence of speaking in tongue,he started considering starting his own ministry. Peter Frederick Jensen is a retired Australian Anglican archbishop, theologian and academic Principal of Moore Theological College (1985-2001). Archbishop of Sydney and Metropolitan of the Province of New South Wales in the Anglican Church of Australia (2001-13). Founding member of Global Anglican Future Conference(GAFCON) (2007) and former General Secretary. Peter was born in Sydney, Australia on 11th July 1943. He was educated at Bellevue Hill public School and The Scots College. He studied law for 2 years and worked as an article clerk before teaching in a primary school. In the 1960s he entered Moore Theological College. He was ordained in the Anglican Church of Australia as a deacon in 1969 an as a priest in 1970. He was a curate at St. Barnabas, Broadway (1969-76). While at Oxford(1976-9), studying for his D.Phil, he was allowed to officiate in the Diocese. He has an MA (1976) from Sydney. BD from London and D. Billy Joe Daugherty was founder and pastor of Victory Christian Center (now Victory Church) in Tulsa. He was also the founder of Victory Christian School, Victory Bible institute and Victory World Missions training Center (now Victory College. Originally from Magnolia, Ark. , he attended Oral Roberts University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Christian education. He was youth pastor in the 1970s at Sheridan Christian Center and became senior pastor at the church in 1976, on retirement of the previous incumbent. 1980, when the attendance had grown from 300 to 2,000, he sought to relocate the church. The church leaders decided not to move so he started what is now the Victory Christian Centre. They meet briefly in a former car leadership building. In 1984 they moved into the vacant Thorau Junior High School. When that building was sold they moved to its present site at 7700 S. Lewis Av. and held services in the Mabee Centre across the road. 2007 they moved into its state of the art, £32 million, 5,000 seat Tulsa Dream Centre built without borrowing money. The same year Billy was named interim president of Oral Roberts University. As of January 2010 Victoria Christian Center reported average Sunday attendance of 9,612 and reported to be the second largest church in Tulsa. Mark (b. 1945) is the former host and director of the weekly television show It Is Written (1991-2004) for which he travelled around the world as a televangelist. He was the first Seventh-day Adventist pastor to do a satellite evangelistic series. He best known for his association with Experience Hope a weekly broadcast on the Hope Channel. He has preached 17 NET series broadcasts throughout the world. He had written more than 70 books. He uses his preaching and evangelical gifts to teach others in seminars, field schools and evangelism institutes. On the 12th June 2020 members of the seventh -day Advent church were informed that he has a condition which could be termed pre-myeloma so he has been advised to cut down on activities, rest and limit his travel commitments. George Edward Vandeman (21 st. October 1916- 3rd November 2000) was a seventh-day adventist who founded the It is Written television ministry. He also founded the New Galley Centre in London. Aged 21 he attended Emmanuel Missionary College in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He found a job working at a weekly 15 minute radio broadcast in Elkkhart, Indiana. He married Nellie Johnson on 2nd October 1938. After completing his second year at college he began working as a full-time evangelist. In 1946 he received a MA from the University of Michigan in speech and communication. he was then ordained as a minister and worked for 4 years as a filed instructor in evangelism at Emmanuel Missionary College. In 1947 he became the associate secretary Ministerial Association at the General Conference. Aged 33 he beacme the youngest to work in Adventist church leadership. After WW11, along with other charismatic Adventist speakers, he spearheaded a drive for public evangelism in major cities like Pittsburgh (1948). Washington (1951) and London (1952). Back in 1946 he had been encouraged to try television as means of reaching others with the Gospel,. He did create a 6 month experimental evangelistic effort but due to lack of financial support it was put on hold. !0 years later, in the Spring of 1956***It Is Writtenwas launched. It was in black and white. Later it became one of the first religious programs in colour. Charles Rozell Swindoll is an evangelical Christian pastor, author, educator and radio preacher. In 1979 he founded Insight for Living a radio program which today is broadcast on more than 2,000 stations around the world in 15 languages. In July 1994 he became President of Dallas Theological College (DTC)- he is now Chancellor. In 1998 he founded Stonebriar Community Church (SCC) in Frisco, Texas. He was born with a stutter and credits his drama teacher, Dick Niema, for helping him to manage it. While at school he was part of the marching band and learned to play all the instruments in the woodwind section. He fulfilled his military obligation with the US Marine Corps and played in their marching band. In 1959 he attended Dallas Theological Seminary. In 1963 he graduated magna cum laude Charles was ordained in 1963. He has held 4 pastorate roles. He spent 2 years in Dallas. 2 years in Waltham Massachusetts (1965-7). 4 years at Irving, Texas (1967-71). 23 years at Fullerton, California (1971-94). He started his current senior pastorate in Frisco, Texas in 1998. The roots for Insight for Living goes back to the summer of 1977 when his sermons from First Evangelical Free church in Fullerton were broadcast on the radio. The 30 minute daily radio broadcast program is still heard on more than 2,100 stations, as well as web and podcasts and translated into 15 languages. Cornelius, born Kornelis, was a Dutch- American Christian Philosopher and Reformed theologian who has been credited as being the originator of Modern presuppositional apologetics. Cornelius was born in Grootsgast, Netherlands. At the age of 10 his family moved to Highland, Indiana. USA. He graduated from Calvin college in 1922. He received a ThM from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1927. He received a PhD from Princeton University in 1927. For 2 years he taught at Princeton before moving, with the conservative group , to the new Westminster Theological Seminary (WTS) in1929 . He spent 43 years at WTS as professor of apologetics and systematic theology. On retiring in 1972 he continued to teach occasionally until 1979. He was also a minister in the Christian Reformed Church in North America and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church from the 1930s until his death in 1987. Cornelius is probably best known for the development of a fresh approach to the task of defending the Christian faith. His apologetics focused on the role of presuppositions, the point of contact between believers and unbelievers, and the antithesis between Christian and non-Christian view points ( He did not like the ‘label’ o f ’ presuppositional’ but accepted it as a matter of convention.) He also argued that the Trinity is of indispensable and insuperable value to a Christian philosophy. Matthew Henry was a nonconformist minister and author. He was born in Wales but spent most of his life in England. He founded in Presbyterian Chapel in Trinity Street, Chester. He is best remembered for his 6 volume biblical commentary Exposition of the Old and New Testaments. Matthew was born on the Broad Oak family estate which bordered Flintshire and Shropshire. He was baptized the next day by the parish rector. As a young child he was frequently ill with fevers. His father provided much of Henry’s early education and by the age of 9 he was able to write Latin and read part of the Greek New Testament. In 1668 he was tutored in grammar by William Turner. Aged 18 he was sent to a school in Islington, London to be tutored by Thomas Doolittle. He then transfered to Grey’s Inn to study Law. He also studied French and Literature. He then gave up his law studies for theology. His friend George Illidge invited him to give his first sermon at Nantwich. In 1686 he was invited to move to Chester. England to establish a congregation. Reluctant at first he accepted and was ordained on 9th May 1687. He continued to live in Chester until 1712. He married twice, Katherine Hardware and Mary Warburton. Matthew spent significant amounts of time studying and writing his sermons and lectures in advance. After he had established himself in Chester he began to travel almost weekly to speak in nearby cities. His impassioned expository speaking style was well received by his listeners and contributed to his growing popularity but his speaking engagements began to impact on his health. He was frequently ill with fevers. In 1698 he travelled to speak in London, for the first time since moving to Chester. He stopping at various places to speak on the way down. The congregation in Chester grew and in 1699 he oversaw the construction of a new building- the Presbyterian Chapel in Trinity Street. In 1704 he travelled to London again. In August he fainted while he was speaking. It took 3 weeks for him to recover. 18th May 1712 he and his family moved to Mare Street, Hackney. He kept busy by giving catechetical lectures in London and his Bible commentary was approaching the publication stage. 1713 his health continued to decline - he had frequent attacks of nephritis (kidney problems) but he continued to maintain his frequent speaking engagements and work on his commentary. 21st June, on his way to Nantwich, he was thrown off his horse. He denied injury to his companions and insisted on continuing his journey. His companions noted he lacked energy and they stopped at the Queen’s Aid House. The next day,22nd June, he lost consciousness and died. Matthew’s legacy is his Bible commentaries. Walter was a prominent Baptist theologian and educator on the faculty of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) at Fort Worth, Texas from 1910 to 1949. Walter was born at Rowell, Arkansas on 19th January 1877. Aged 15 his family moved to the West Texas community of Tebo (now Tye). Education 1896-8 Simmons College (now Hardin-Simmons Uni.) 1908 Baylor University M.A. 1908 Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary degree 1910 Rochester Theological Seminary B.D. 1916 Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) Th.D 1931 SBTS Ph.D. He was baptized by W.M. Reynolds and received into the fellowship of Harmony Baptist Church (HBC) at Caps, Texas. He was ordained by HBC in 1899 where he was serving as pastor. He served as pastor at a number of other Baptist churches. Walter’s enduring legacy to Southern Baptist life lies in his 39 year teaching career at SBTS. He joined SBTS in 1910. Systematic theology was his main responsibility he distinguished himself as the preeminent Southern Baptist theologian during the 1930s and 1940s. He was able to communicate with both laymen and scholars. His theological works reflect a biblical rather than a systematic approach. In the Southern Baptist Convention he often lectured at conferences and assemblies and spoke at state and national conventions. The Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board used him as a counsellor and advisor in selecting missionary candidates. He was a member of the Southwestern Society of Biblical Study and Research. Walter gave the Wilkinson Lectures at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Chicago in 1946. He wrote 15 books and numerous articles for professional journals and periodicals. Johnny M. Hunt is an evangelical Christian pastor, author and former President of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). He was formerly the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Woodstock, Georgia. Johnny was born in Lumberton , North Carolina. He is a member of the Lumbee Native American Indian tribe based in North Carolina. His father left the family when he was just 7. Johnny became an alcoholic and gambler at a young age -dropping out of school and ‘managing’ a pool room. In his book Out of the Poolroom he tells how he had a radical conversion to Christianity. He was mentored by several men from his home church in Wilmington, North Carolina and came to the realization that God had called him to the ministry. He earned degrees at Gardner- Webb College (B.A)1979 and the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (MD) 1981. He ministered at a number of churches, including his home church of Longleaf Baptist Church in Wilmington. He became senior minister at First Baptist Church (FBC) in Woodstock Georgia (1986 -December 2019). FBC Woodstock when he joined had about 1,000 members , It grew to more than 19,000 members during his 33 years of ministry and is now one of the largest churches in the USA. Dag is an African evangelist, pastor, author and conference speaker based in Accra, Ghana. He is the founder and presiding Bishop of United Denomination Originating from the Lighthouse Group of Churches (UD-OLGC). He is also the founder of the Anagkazo Bible Ministry Training Center (ABMTC) located in the eastern region of Ghana. Dag also serves on the board pf directors of Church Growth International and the Pentecostal World fellowship. Dug was born on the 14th May 1963 in London to a Swiss mother Elizabeth and a Ghanaian father Nathaniel Heward-Mills. The family moved to Accra, Ghana, soon after his birth. He was converted at Achimota Secondary school. he joined Christian youth campaigns ,Scripture Union and Calvary Road Singers. He trained to be a medical doctor at University of Ghana medical school. He started the Lighthouse Chapel International (1987) while still a student having felt a strong call from God to start a church. it started in a classroom in the School of Hygiene, Korle-Bu with a group of 15. They moved to the canteen. They moved to an old cinema hall in 1992. It became the first Korle Gonno Cathedral. Hillsong Church, commonly known as Hillsong, is a charismatic Christian megachurch based in Australia. The church was originally called Hills Christian Life Center was established in 1983 in Baulkham Hills, New South Wales by Brian and Bobbie Houston. Hillsong is known famously for its worship music. Through the 1980s and 1990s the congregation grew from 45 members to nearly 20,000. This was the result of strategic marketing to target the younger generations. Hillsong’s successfully established a global music standard. In 1997 the church moved to Baulkham’s Hills Norwest Business Park. Percy Bartimus Crawford was an evangelist and Fundamentalist leader who especially emphasized youth ministry, During the late 1950s he saw the potential of FM radio and UHF television. He had a number of FIRSTS. He was the first to build a successful Christian Broadcasting network. He was the first to create a coast to coast religious program. And the first to create a religious station in the world. He also founded The King’s College and Pinebrook, a Bible conference in the Pocono Mountains. Peter was born on 20th October 1902 in Minnsdosa, Manitoba, Canada. His family moved to Vancouver. He was the youngest of 3 boys. His father left his mother so he had to drop out of school to help support the family. While still a teenager he moved to the USA. After high school he prepared to go to the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). 23rd September 1923 he was converted at Reuben Torrey’s church under the evangelist Willie Nicholson. Instead of going to UCLA he went to the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA). At BIOLA he discovered his gift of evangelism and committed himself to a full time Christian service. I’ll give every drop of blood I have. At Wheaton Collge he earned his BA (1929) and obtained a US citizenship. During the summer months at BIOLA and Wheaton he took evangelistic tours, with his gospel quartet, across the country. He then went to Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. In the summer while there he conducted a series of open air meetings. October 1931 he broadcastYoung People’s Church of the Air.from Barnes Memorial Mission. In 10 years he built the first radio ministry that aired on over 400 stations. In 1931 he met Ruth Duvall, a gifted pianist and arranged. They married in 1933 and they began their life long partnership in evangelism. Ruth assembled a musical entourage -this distinguished them from evangelical ministries in their era (1933-60). They kept mass evangelism alive nationwide using radio broadcasts and rallies in the 1930’s and 1940s. 1933 he founded Pinebrook Bible Conference for young people. David Paul Jeremiah is an American evangelical Christian author, founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, a Southern Baptist megachurch in El Cajon, California. Jeremiah was born in Toledo, Ohio on 13th February 1941. His father, James T. Jeremiah was a baptist pastor and former president of Cedarville University. He earned BA from Cedarville University (1963) and an MA from Dallas Theological Seminary (1967). Cedarville awarded him a honorary D.D (1981). In 1969 he became senior pastor at Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne (1969-1981). In 1981 he moved to California where he succeeded Tim LaHaye as senior pastor at Shadow Mountain Community Church (1981-present day). In 1982 he founded Turning Point Ministries - a non profit organization which is solely supported by listeners and viewers. It focuses on multi-media Bible instruction. Its flagship programme is Turning Point - a 1/2 hour radio programme. In 2000 he developed a national television programme. The radio programme is now available to nearly 1/2 a million listeners. 50 years later, Orchard Road Centre pastor still going strong Marilyn Allene Hickey is an American Christian minster and televangelist who teaches Bible studies both nationally and internationally. Born on 1st July 1931 she is 90 next year. Marilyn, aged 11 was told she had an enlarged heart which grew worse until she had surgery. She became a born again Christian when teenager. She gained a BA in Collective Foreign Languages at the University of North Colorado. According to her daughter, Susan Bowling, her father was the first to fully commit to a life of ministry but said both were passionate about God. Marilyn met Wallace Hickey at an Assemblies of God Church, where he served as pastor. . They married on Boxing day -26thDecember 1954 and were married for over 50 years (1954-2012). Together they founded and pastored at Gospel Chapel in Denver (1956-2012) . The church grew from 25 and peaked at 4,000 and was renamed Orchard Road Christian Center and enlarged 4 times.
